Making POIC 'Rotterdam of the East'
Dr Johnson Tee
THE Malaysia oil palm industry began in 1917 and grew very slowly until late 1950s, when the agricultural diversification policy resulted in a switch over from Rubber to oil palm. Since then, the industry grew rapidly. At present, very little room remains for any significant increase in oil palm plantation acreage in Peninsular Malaysia. Similarly most of deforested land in Sabah is covered with this golden crop (about 1.25 million hectares of it) and the State is proceeding very cautiously on any expansion plan to avoid any backlash from environmental groups.
