KOTA KINABALU, Wed. (Nov 14, 2007) - The state-run palm oil industrial cluster in Lahad Datu (POIC Lahad Datu) received a further investor push today with the entry of fertilizer manufacturer Union Harvest group (UH).

UH, one of the leading fertilizer manufacturers in Malaysia, is partly owned by Sumifert Sdn Bhd, which is linked to Japanese multi-national Sumitomo Corporation.

Through its business network, UH's presence in Lahad Datu will also expose POIC to its global network which involves suppliers and customers in Jordan, Japan, Singapore, Germany and China.

UH's subsidiary, Union Harvest (East Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, signed an agreement with POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd today for the purchase of 23.24 acres of land at POIC Lahad Datu to set up its 5th fertilizer manufacturing and storage facility in Malaysia. UH's other facilities are in Kuantan (Pahang), Pasir Gudang (Johor), Port Klang (Selangor) and Butterworth (Penang).

At the signing ceremony witnessed by Sabah Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, UH was represented by its managing director, Mr Wong Yu, while CEO Dr Pang Teck Wai represented POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd.

UH was the 15th company to have confirmed purchase of land at POIC Lahad Datu, where two biodiesel plants are currently operating.

UH was established in 1975 and is a manufacturer of NPK Compacted Compound Fertilizers that are marketed under the brand names of Red Deer and MPOB F1. It also supplies straight fertilizers (ammonium sulphate, rock phosphate, potassium chloride, etc.) and fertilizer mixtures.

At its POIC Lahad Datu facility which is due to begin operation at the end of 2009, UH is expected to produce industrial chemicals as well.

UH's major customers includes various companies from the Government sector i.e. FELDA, RISDA, MPOB, as well as the public and private sector, such as, KL Kepong Bhd, Boustead Estates Agency Sdn Bhd, Asiatic Development Bhd, JC Chang Group and many more.
